Besides the Galaxy Note 10, 10 Plus, Book S and smart watch, Samsung has also launched 108-megapixel mobile sensor. This smartphone camera sensor that’s likely to appear in an incoming Xiaomi Redmi smartphone. The 1/1.33-inch ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor, developed by Samsung in collaboration with Xiaomi, is one of the largest smartphone sensors ever. Earlier, the sensor was announced by Xiaomi, who will be the first company to use the camera in a phone for its Redmi sub-brand.

On the other hand, the sensor measures an enormous 1/1.33-inch in total area. Besides that it pushes towards the size of sensors in dedicated SLR cameras.

Samsung’s Mobile Sensor

Well, besides all, a 108-megapixel sensor will have extremely small pixels. By default, though, Samsung’s Tetracell tech will gather the light from four pixels, transforming it into a 27-megapixel sensor. Despite that user still can snap 108-megapixel photos if you want, but that will likely require brightly lit shooting situations.

On the other hand, Samsung’s Smart-ISO mechanism will automatically select lower ISOs in brighter light, and high ISOs in dim shooting situations.  Not only that, it is the high-resolution and low-light photo shooting, the sensor will allow for 6K movies at 30 fps (6,016 x 3,384). In fact that is unbelievable achievement for a smartphone camera.

However, its large 1/1.33-inch size is around three quarters of the size of the 1-inch sensor found in the Sony RX100 VII compact camera. Thu it means it might not be an ideal fit for every smartphone out there.

According to Samsung press note, “For ISOCELL Bright HMX, Xiaomi and Samsung have worked closely together from the early conceptual stage to production that has resulted in a groundbreaking 108Mp image sensor. We are very pleased that picture resolutions previously available only in a few top-tier DSLR cameras can now be designed into smartphones,” said Lin Bin, co-founder and president of Xiaomi.”
